Obesity Linked To Heightened Risk Of Cognitive Decline In Middle Age

According to a new study by French researchers, people who suffer from obesity not only put themselves at risk for diabetes and heart disease, but also show a faster decline of mental abilities in middle age.  The study adds to existing reports of adverse health consequences associated with obesity and fuels concerns that the United States is facing a major crises as waist lines continue to grow and individuals fail to address the underlying causes of obesity.

Historically, obesity has been linked to high blood pressure, as well as heightened risk for early death and chronic illness.  In 2005, more than 400 million adults worldwide were obese, and that number is expected to increase to over 700 million by 2015.  Obesity is often linked to a condition called metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by a combination of high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.  According to the study, individuals who experienced this condition was a decline in mental condition of more than 22.5% over non-obese study participants.
