Lose Weight and Lower Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

The same tools used for fast weight loss may also help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, a recent study has found. Researchers associated with Harvard University found that the type of fat individuals consume may have a direct correlation to their risk of mental decline in the later years of life. In fact, the type of fat had an even greater impact on risk than the amount of fat that was eaten.

How to Lose Weight Fast and Lower Alzheimer’s Risk

The study was conducted by Dr. Oliva Okereke, a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, which is affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Dr. Okereke and her fellow researchers examined records of more than 6,000 women over the age of 65 who underwent mental testing over a four-year period. The subjects in the study also answered questions about their diet and lifestyle choices.

Researchers found that women who ate large amounts of saturated fats, the type found in foods like butter and red meat, had a higher incidence of cognitive decline. In contrast, women who consumed more monounsaturated fat foods, such as olive oil and avocados, exhibited better memory function throughout the study. Researchers also found that the amount of fat consumed did not matter as much as the type of fat the women ate.

Same Dietary Habits Promote Fast Weight Loss

The same principles of fat consumption that may lower the risk of Alzheimer’s may also promote fast weight loss in individuals who combine choosing foods lower in fat with a low-calorie diet and daily exercise program. Although this study was smaller in scale, the data supports the Harvard research.
