According to a new rodent study, the earlier you try to lose weight, the better. Researchers have found evidence suggesting that the longer a person remains overweight, the harder it becomes to shed the excess pounds. However, more studies are needed to determine for certain if these findings will hold as true for human weight gain.

The study examined weight loss in mice, based on whether the mice were overweight early in life or gained the weight later on. The animal model indicated that the longer mice remained overweight, the more seemingly “irreversible” their weight problem became. Even overweight mice prescribed a rigorous fast weigh loss program were unable to reach an ideal weight, even if the pounds came off at the beginning of the program.

Researchers determined that overweight mice appeared to “reset” their normal weight to the heavier one, which could indicate why obesity becomes a self-perpetuating condition in some adults.
