It’s that time of year again! You’ve polished off the last of the Christmas cookies and rum-spiked eggnog, and your thoughts are now centered around personal goal setting for the New Year. Everyone wants to live more healthfully, but the real challenge is sticking to your New Year’s resolution of getting in shape.

Wondering how to lose weight and keep if off for good in 2013? Remember, your dream of attaining a leaner, stronger body will take time. Set realistic expectations and use these seven tips to help make the most of your New Year’s resolution.

  1. Set realistic goals:  We all want to find the easiest ways to lose weight fast, but the reality is that even five or ten pounds will take time. Start with small goals that are both measurable and practicable to avoid frustration.
  2. Surround yourself with support: Tell your friends and family about your weight loss goals, and include them in your gradual accomplishments. They will offer support and encouragement to keep you on track.
  3. Get a workout buddy: Chances are at least one of your friends has a similar weight loss resolution. You are more likely to exercise regularly if you have a partner in crime, whether it’s a morning walk around the neighborhood, aerobics classes or weekend yoga classes.
  4. Be positive: Research shows that positive goal setting is much more effective in the long-run. Avoid a negative mindset of diet deprivation and focus on the exciting changes your new eating habits are helping to achieve.
  5. Plan ahead: Don’t let the stress of work and daily life interfere with your weight loss goals. Plan ahead by creating healthy, low-calorie meals at the beginning of the week, and mapping out your schedule to include at least 30 minutes a day for some form of physical activity.
  6. Learn something new: The New Year is a great time to step out of your comfort zone and learn something new. Take a Zumba class, sign up for Pilates, or ask your local fitness center about new classes for members. You may find yourself even more motivated to exercise!
  7. Allow yourself some rewards: Complete deprivation on any type of diet usually ends in binge eating. One cookie or piece of pie isn’t going to spoil your weight loss plan, so allow yourself a few indulgences from time to time. This could be a relaxing massage, a glass of red wine, or the occasional sweet treat.

How to lose weight in 2013

Choosing an appropriate weight loss program can be challenging, as different things work for different people. Research shows that the best program for fast weight loss is one that incorporates a multi-dimensional approach to both diet and exercise, like those available at The Center for Medical Weight Loss. Their physician-assisted weight loss plans are customized to your specific lifestyle, preferences and goals – and are focused on addressing the root of our eating behaviors.

Boasting the largest network of weight loss physicians in the U.S., the Center operates under the guidance of founder and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Kaplan. Their health experts have developed the most effective measures of how to lose weight in a safe and healthy manner. Dr. Kaplan confirms that the average patient at the Center for Medical Weight Loss loses 11.1 percent of their body weight in the first 12 weeks. Even more impressive, more than 95 percent of those people kept the weight off one year after starting the program.

The Center operates in more than 450 locations across the country, and special introductory offers are available for first-time customers in most locations. Enter your zip code in the box above to find one nearest you.
