By fasting twice a week, the London-based doctor not only figured out how to lose weight fast, he was also able to reduce his body fat, lower his blood glucose levels, and became healthier in other ways as well.

Details of the Fast Diet

According to Dr. Mosley, people on the Fast Diet can eat whatever they want for five days. For the two-day fasting period, people only eat 25% of the normal recommended daily calorie intake. Women can consume 500 calories per day while men can consume about 600 calories per day. The fasting doesn’t have to occur during two consecutive days in the week. For instance, a person can fast on Monday and Thursday, if they choose.

Dr. Mosley encourages people to eat protein and low-calorie foods filled with nutrients when they are fasting. The diet is considered one of the easy ways to lose weight since there isn’t a structured meal plan. People can choose which foods they want to consume and how often they eat throughout the day as long as they don’t exceed the maximum number of calories. Some individuals may prefer to eat the low-calorie foods for breakfast and dinner while others may prefer to only eat one meal per day.

Clinical studies on alternate day fasting

The Fast Diet concept is based on clinical studies regarding fasting that were conducted in the United States. The results showed that severely restricting calories improved brain function, reduced the risk of cancer, and lengthened the life expectancy of the studies’ participants. When the studies were performed on rats, researchers noticed the rats started producing a protein that caused their brain cells to regenerate at a faster rate when they were fasting.

A clinical trial on alternate day fasting conducted at the University of Illinois revealed a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease regardless of whether people ate high-fat foods or low-fat foods five days a week. Both study groups showed the same decrease in their blood pressure levels and a reduction in bad cholesterol. The clinical trial also concluded that people don’t tend to overeat or gorge themselves when they are not fasting. In fact, the participants only ate 10% more food when they weren’t fasting.

Dr. Mosley replicated different aspects of the clinical studies in order to implement the Fast Diet. Within six weeks of starting the weight loss plan, Dr. Mosley noticed several improvements in his overall health. He lost almost 20 pounds and his blood glucose went from pre-diabetic levels to normal. Additional health benefits included an 8% reduction in body fat and cholesterol levels were lowered to the point where he no longer needed medication. The Fast Diet also helped Dr. Mosley get rid of the fat in his stomach which reduced the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Criticisms of the Fast Diet

Even though certain studies reveal the benefits of alternate day fasting, there are concerns that people won’t receive the nutrients their bodies need if they follow the Fast Diet. Some nutrition experts are also worried that people may become susceptible to taking the diet to the extreme and develop serious medical problems. Another critical issue raised is the lack of scientific research regarding the long-term effects of following the Fast Diet. Nutritionists warn that fasting isn’t a suitable option for everyone. If a person wants to fast or follow a serious weight loss plan such as the Fast Diet, it should be done under the supervision of a physician. The Fast Diet is not recommended for pregnant women, children, people who are underweight and individuals who suffer from eating disorders.
